Overview

Flying over Frankfurt by helicopter

How much is a helicopter flight over Frankfurt?

HeliSeven's 45-minute Skyline flight from Mainz costs €379 per person, VAT included. It flies north past Frankfurt Airport and over the Taunus and the Feldberg, makes a 180-degree turn over the skyline and returns to Mainz. A private helicopter for your group costs about €1,420 to €4,130 per flight hour for the whole aircraft.

Frankfurt's skyline flights start in Mainz, west of the city, and HeliSeven's Rhine valley flight leaves from Mainz-Finthen airfield.

HeliSeven flies its Mainz sightseeing flights in a Robinson R44 with three window seats, and also flies from Mannheim, Augsburg, Stuttgart and Speyer.

For business travel, Egelsbach, about 10 km south-east of Frankfurt Airport, is a general aviation airport with no scheduled flights. Landing at a company site or venue needs the landowner's consent and a permit from the Hesse aviation authority.

Airfields around Frankfurt

Mainz-Finthen (EDFZ)

About 9 km south-west of Mainz city centre, with two 1,000 m runways, one asphalt and lit, one grass. Helicopters up to 14 tonnes maximum take-off weight may use it, and helicopter training is based there.

Frankfurt Egelsbach (EDFE)

About 10 km south-east of Frankfurt Airport, with a 1,400 m asphalt runway and a 670 m grass runway. A general aviation airport with no scheduled flights; with about 77,000 movements in 2007 it was then Germany's busiest.

Private land

A meadow, car park or company site with the landowner's consent and an Außenlandeerlaubnis from the state aviation authority under section 25 LuftVG.

Private charter

Door-to-door helicopter charter

  • HeliSeven flies door-to-door shuttles between company sites and to events, taking off from suitable meadows, car parks, company grounds or private land.
  • Every landing site is checked individually, and a landing is possible where the area is suitable and the permit is granted.
  • The shuttle helicopter is an AS350 B3e, with room for the pilot and up to three passengers; larger groups fly in more than one helicopter.
  • Short-notice flights are often possible, sometimes within a few hours. In bad weather the plan is adjusted or another time is offered.
  • As a guide, a private helicopter costs €1,420 to €4,130 per flight hour for the whole aircraft.

German law

Where a helicopter may land in Germany

Away from an airfield, a helicopter needs two things before it lands: the landowner's consent and an Außenlandeerlaubnis from the state aviation authority.

  • Section 25 of the Luftverkehrsgesetz (LuftVG) allows a take-off or landing outside an approved airfield only when the landowner or other entitled party has agreed and the aviation authority has issued a permit.
  • The permit is granted by the aviation authority of the federal state (Land) where you land, which carries out this task for the federal government under section 31(2) no. 13 LuftVG.
  • Using an airfield outside its runways, outside its opening hours or during its restricted hours also needs the airfield operator's consent and a permit.
  • Permits can be general or for one landing, and can carry conditions and time limits.
  • No permit is needed for an emergency or safety landing, or at a designated landing site of public interest, which the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt approves.
  • The landowner can claim compensation for damage caused by the take-off or landing.
  • Approved helipads are licensed landing sites; anything else is an off-airfield landing that needs the permit from the competent aviation authority.

Billing

What goes into a helicopter price

On a private charter you hire the whole helicopter and its pilot, so the price is per flight, not per seat.

  • Flying time at the hourly rate for the type: as a guide, €1,420 to €4,130 per flight hour for the whole helicopter.
  • Positioning when the helicopter is based away from your pickup point, both to reach you and to fly home.
  • Landing and handling charges at the airports and airfields you use.
  • The landing permit for a meadow, car park or company site. HeliSeven, for example, offers to organise the official permits as an add-on and prices each charter on flight time, route, landing site and extras.
  • Shared sightseeing seats are cheaper: from €185 per person in Berlin and from €259 per person from Augsburg or Mainz, VAT included.

Safety

Know who operates your flight

  • The Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) publishes the list of licensed German air carriers; the list we checked is dated 15 September 2026.
  • HeliSeven, which flies the sightseeing flights from Augsburg and Mainz, holds LBA air operator certificate D-185.
  • The company selling a seat and the company flying the helicopter can be different. Ask for the operator's name.
  • As a broker, Altivo Jets names the operator before you book.
