How a helicopter wedding works
Usually, if the venue is outside a built-up area. French rules let helicopters use a hélisurface, an area that need not be prepared and may only be used occasionally, with fewer than 200 movements a calendar year and 20 a day. Inside a built-up area it needs a special authorisation from the prefect, and a prefect can require a prior declaration or ban a site.
Most wedding flights are short: from an airfield or hotel to the venue, between the ceremony and the reception, or from the venue to the first night's hotel. The helicopter waits or repositions between legs.
A hélisurface is not an aerodrome. Outside built-up areas, its use is free in principle under the order of 6 May 1995, within the limits the prefect sets. Since 2022, a prefect can make hélisurface use in listed communes subject to a declaration, valid for the calendar year.
The operator checks the site, the approach and any local prefectoral order before confirming. A couple fits a single-engine Airbus H125, and larger parties take a twin such as the H135 or AW109. Rates are about €1,420 to €4,130 per flight hour for the whole helicopter.
For flights around Paris or the Riviera, see our Paris and Saint-Tropez helicopter pages.

Landing away from an airfield in France
| Rule | What it means for your wedding |
|---|---|
| Hélisurface | An area that need not be prepared and may only be used occasionally. It is not an aerodrome. |
| Occasional use | Fewer than 200 movements a calendar year and 20 a day, or a relatively high number over a short, limited period. |
| Built-up areas | Use inside an agglomération needs a special authorisation granted by the prefect as an exception. |
| Prior declaration | Outside built-up areas, the prefect can require a declaration in listed communes. Operators and pilots declare, and it is valid for the calendar year. The declaration includes the landowner's agreement. |
| Bans and limits | The prefect can restrict or ban a site for serious noise, public safety, environmental protection or defence. Residents within 150 m of a site outside built-up areas can ask for action. |

What the venue needs
- The owner's agreement to land, in writing.
- An open area away from guests, marquees, trees and power lines. The operator confirms the size it needs for the helicopter.
- A check of any prefectoral order for the commune, which the operator makes before confirming.
- Someone to keep guests back during landing and take-off, and a car as a backup if weather stops the flight.

What a wedding helicopter costs
Helicopters are priced for the whole aircraft by the flight hour, at about €1,420 to €4,130 in France, plus positioning from the operator's base and any waiting time. A short arrival or getaway near the operator's base costs least. Ask for one all-in price for the day.
