Cheapest ways to fly private in India and the US

Private flying gets cheaper when you match the aircraft, route and timing to the trip. These are the options that genuinely cut the bill.

Start with the smallest aircraft that fits

Charter is priced for the whole aircraft, mostly by the hour. That makes aircraft size the biggest lever on cost. Bigger aircraft cost far more to buy and run, and that shows up in the hourly rate.

On Altivo, turboprops start from ₹1.49 lakh per hour in India and $4,020 per hour in the US, and light jets from ₹2.48 lakh and $5,500. Compare that with a heavy jet at ₹6.99 lakh to ₹10.01 lakh per hour in India and $15,070 to $18,480 per hour in the US. Every rate is for the whole aircraft before taxes.

So the first question is not which jet you would like, but which aircraft does the job. Count the passengers, estimate the luggage and check the distance. If a turboprop or light jet covers it comfortably, you have already made the biggest saving available.

Turboprops: the value pick for regional trips

Turboprops use a turbine engine driving a propeller. They cruise more slowly than jets, but on short and medium sectors the time difference is small and the saving can be large. Altivo's turboprops seat 6 to 9 passengers.

A good example is the Pilatus PC-12. Pilatus says the current PC-12 PRO carries up to nine passengers, cruises at up to 290 knots and has a maximum range of 1,765 nautical miles. It can also operate from short runways and unpaved grass, gravel or snow strips, which opens up airfields a jet cannot use.

The aircraft is relatively affordable to buy. AIN reported the PC-12 PRO's price at $6.8 million when Pilatus unveiled it in March 2025. Turboprops typically charter for ₹1.49 lakh to ₹2.2 lakh per hour in India and $4,020 to $4,900 per hour in the US.

Light jets: jet speed at the lowest jet price

If you want jet speed and altitude without paying for a bigger cabin, a light jet is the step up. Altivo's light jets seat 4 to 8 passengers.

Textron Aviation lists the Cessna Citation M2 Gen3 with a maximum cruise speed of 404 knots, a range of 1,550 nautical miles and a ceiling of 41,000 feet. Light jets also sell well: GAMA's 2025 shipment results, reported by GlobalAir in February 2026, named Embraer's Phenom 300 series the world's best-selling light jet for the 14th year in a row.

A light jet typically charters for ₹2.48 lakh to ₹3.52 lakh per hour in India and $5,500 to $9,850 per hour in the US. The trade-off is space. Cabins are compact and baggage room is limited, so check both before you book a full group with large suitcases. For a short trip with a small group and soft bags, a light jet is often all you need.

Empty legs: the biggest discounts, with conditions

An empty leg is a flight an aircraft has to make without passengers, usually to return home after a one-way trip or to reach its next client. Operators sell these flights below the price of a full charter. Business Travel Executive reported in 2023 that empty legs can be 25 to 75 percent cheaper than a private charter, depending on the passenger's needs.

The catch is flexibility. The operator sets the route and timing, and if the original client changes plans the empty leg can move or be cancelled. Empty legs suit leisure trips with some give in the dates. Altivo sends empty leg alerts by email, priced below a full charter.

Use empty legs as a bonus rather than the whole plan. Sign up for alerts, and when one lines up with your dates, compare it against the full charter quote for the same trip. If the empty leg moves, you still have the full charter to fall back on.

Fill the seats and share the cost

Because you pay for the aircraft, not per seat, every empty seat is money spent on nothing. A light jet carrying six people costs about the same per hour as one carrying two, so the cost per person drops by two-thirds.

Plan trips around groups: family holidays, a team visiting a client, friends heading to a wedding. Split the all-in quote by the number of travellers and compare it with what the group would spend on scheduled flights, counting the time saved at both ends.

Check that a full cabin still works. Small jets have limited baggage space and every aircraft has weight limits, so a full load of passengers with large suitcases may need the next size up. Give us an honest luggage count and the quote will reflect an aircraft that can actually carry it.

Shape the trip to avoid hidden costs

The NBAA's charter consumer guidance lists the costs that can sit on top of flying time, including one-way fees, waiting time, crew travel and overnight charges, landing fees and catering. Planning around them saves real money.

A same-day return avoids crew overnight charges. Booking the return with the same aircraft means you are not paying for it to fly home empty. Departing from an airport where the aircraft is already based cuts positioning time. Within the US, the NBAA notes that charter can use more than 5,000 public-use airports, so a quieter airport nearby may suit you and the operator better than the busiest hub.

Altivo quotes are all-in, so these items are already counted in the price you see. In India the quote is in rupees with GST on a separate line, and in the US it is in dollars with federal excise tax included. That makes it easy to compare two versions of the same trip.

Be wary of a price that looks far below the rest. The FAA warns that a legitimate US operator must charge federal excise tax, and lists red flags such as a company supplying the aircraft and crew while asking you to sign away operational control. In the FAA's words, if the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Helicopters for short hops

A helicopter does not need a runway, so it can land at helipads close to where you are actually going, cutting out ground transfers at both ends. In India, helicopters are a large part of non-scheduled flying. Business Standard reported in February 2026, citing DGCA data, that 220 of the 445 aircraft operated by India's non-scheduled operators were helicopters, and that helicopters flew 292,431 departures in 2024-25. The same report counted 54 operators flying rotary-wing aircraft that year.

Helicopter charter is priced by the hour like any other aircraft, at ₹1.21 lakh to ₹2.48 lakh per hour in India and $1,490 to $4,510 per hour in the US.

Helicopters make the most sense when the alternative is a long drive at either end: a resort, a hill station, a factory site or a pilgrimage town far from the nearest airport. If your destination is a private helipad or an unusual landing site, tell us early so the operator can confirm it can be used before you plan around it.

Per-seat options and their trade-offs

If you do not need a whole aircraft, per-seat flying can cost less again. In India, the DGCA allows Non-Scheduled Operator Permit holders to sell individual seats as well as whole-aircraft charters, as long as they do not publish a timetable.

In the US, selling private seats one at a time is tightly controlled. An NBAA guide to selling charter by the seat explains that it generally requires a structure such as a public charter under DOT Part 380, or limited scheduled operations with specific aircraft and frequency limits.

The trade-off is control. Per-seat flights run on set routes and times, with other passengers aboard. For full privacy and your own schedule, a small aircraft or an empty leg is usually the better value.

Ask a specialist
What is the cheapest type of private aircraft to charter?+

Smaller aircraft cost less per hour. On Altivo, turboprops start from ₹1.49 lakh per hour in India and $4,020 per hour in the US, and light jets from ₹2.48 lakh and $5,500. The cheapest option for your trip depends on distance, group size and luggage, so we compare categories in the quote.

Are empty legs the cheapest way to fly private?+

They are often the cheapest way to fly a given aircraft, because they are priced below a full charter. Business Travel Executive reported in 2023 that discounts can range from 25 to 75 percent. The trade-off is that the route and time are fixed by the operator, and the flight can change if the original client's plans change.

Is a turboprop safe compared with a jet?+

Turboprops are flown by the same licensed operators under the same rules as jets: a DGCA Non-Scheduled Operator Permit in India and an FAA Part 135 or Part 121 certificate in the US. Safety depends on the operator and its certificate, not on whether the aircraft has propellers. The operator is named on every Altivo quote, so you can check it.

Does a one-way charter cost more than a round trip?+

Per flight hour it can, because the aircraft often has to return empty and some operators add a one-way fee. On a round trip with the same aircraft you avoid paying for that empty return. If you only need one way, ask about empty legs on your route, which are priced below a full charter.

Can I buy a single seat on a private jet?+

Some per-seat services exist. In India, NSOP holders may sell individual seats as well as whole-aircraft charters. In the US, per-seat private flights generally run as public charters or limited scheduled services under specific rules. They fly set routes and times with other passengers, so you trade privacy and flexibility for a lower fare.

Are taxes included in Altivo's prices?+

Yes. Altivo quotes are all-in. In India the quote is in rupees with GST shown as a separate line. In the US it is in dollars with federal excise tax included. The hourly rates shown on this page are for the whole aircraft before taxes, so the final all-in quote for your trip will be higher than the hourly rate alone.
