How much a helicopter costs in India
The cheapest new helicopter, the two-seat Robinson R22, lists at $375,000 (about ₹3.6 crore). A four-seat Robinson R44 Raven II lists at $615,500 (about ₹5.9 crore), and turbine helicopters such as the Bell 505 or Airbus H125 cost roughly ₹22 crore to ₹35 crore and more. A private buyer in India then pays 3% customs duty plus 40% GST, which takes an R44 to about ₹8.5 crore before it flies.
Only Robinson publishes list prices. For every other maker, the best guides are dealer asking prices, contract values and published used-market averages, which is what this page uses.
The price on the order form is only the start. Importing for private use adds 3% basic customs duty, a 10% surcharge on that duty, and 40% GST since 22 September 2025. Aircraft imported for licensed charter (NSOP) pay 2.5% duty and 5% GST, but only while they are used solely for charter.
Then come the running costs: fuel, maintenance reserves, pilot, insurance and hangar. Published estimates for a Robinson R44 come to about $1,050 per flying hour all in at 300 hours a year; turbine helicopters cost two to four times that.
For most people, renting a helicopter by the hour, at about ₹80,000 to ₹3 lakh, is far cheaper than owning one. We arrange that through licensed operators.

Robinson figures are the maker's own list prices. Others are the best published figures we could verify; contract prices for police or rescue aircraft include mission equipment, so they run higher than a private buyer would pay.

Import duty and GST on a helicopter
| Private use | Licensed charter (NSOP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Basic customs duty | 3% | 2.5% |
| Social welfare surcharge | 10% of the duty | 10% of the duty |
| GST (IGST on import) | 40% since 22 Sep 2025 (was 28%) | 5% |
| Worked example: R44 Raven II at ₹5.91 crore | About ₹8.5 crore landed | About ₹6.4 crore landed |
The worked example is our arithmetic on the list price only; freight, insurance and handling are added to the value that duty is charged on. The charter rate applies only while the helicopter is used solely for non-scheduled charter: in a case reported in February 2026, a company's helicopter was confiscated and duty recovered because most of its hours were unpaid trips for its own officials.

How to buy and register a helicopter in India
The import procedure above is DGCA's 2017 process (ATC 2 of 2017), with a fee of ₹1 lakh for aircraft up to 10,000 kg; check the current steps with DGCA before you commit.
Landing at your own site needs the landowner's consent and a notice to the district, not a separate approval each time. Our wedding helicopter page sets out the process.
- 01Who can own one
Indian citizens, Indian companies and government bodies can register a helicopter; resident non-citizens register in a separate category.
- 02Import permission
For private use, DGCA in-principle approval, Home Ministry security clearance and a DGFT import licence; for charter, DGCA approval and an import NOC.
- 03Register it
The helicopter gets VT- marks. The registration fee is ₹20,000 for aircraft up to 15,000 kg.
