How the trip works
Florence (LIRQ), 81 km north of Siena, is the closest main airport, but in summer it is usually quick turns only. Pisa (LIRP) allowed up to 72 hours of parking in summer 2026 when space was available. Siena Ampugnano (LIQS), about 12 km from the city, takes only small aircraft.
The Palio is two races a year, each three laps of Piazza del Campo lasting about a minute and a half. The four days of events around each race fill Siena, so the trip is planned around the airport, the drive and where you watch.
Florence has a short runway that takes aircraft up to the size of an A320neo, and in summer 2026 it was usually quick turns only, with remote parking occasionally available up to Gulfstream G550 size. Pisa, shared with the Italian Air Force, allowed a maximum of 72 hours with no extensions and was open 04:00 to 20:55 UTC.

From Florence, the Raccordo Firenze-Siena runs to Siena, 81 km away. Book the driver with the jet, as the city fills on race days.
