Flying in for Day of the Dead
Oaxaca International (MMOX), about 8 km south of the city. It is an airport of entry with customs and an 8,038 ft runway, but it is not open 24 hours: the directory lists 11:00 to 01:00 UTC, which is 05:00 to 19:00 local time.
The festivity is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Families welcome the dead home with flowers, candles and offerings; in Mexico 1 November is dedicated to children who have died and 2 November to adults. In 2025 Oaxaca's celebrations drew 86,900 visitors, 75% of them from abroad, according to the state government.
The 2026 programme has more than 100 activities, including 30 monumental altars in the historic centre, a 250 m² sand carpet and the Gran Comparsa at the Jalatlaco church, and a flower route out to marigold fields in villages such as Teotitlán del Valle and Mitla.
The airport takes its name from Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, whose cemetery is visited on the night of 1 November. One card issuer's four-night package for 30 October to 3 November 2026 is already listed as sold out, so secure rooms before the aircraft. See private jet charter in Mexico City if you are pairing the trip with the Grand Prix.
