Flying private to the Derby
Louisville Muhammad Ali International (SDF) handles most Derby jets, with Bowman Field (LOU) closer to town for smaller aircraft and Clark Regional (JVY) across the river in Indiana. In 2026 the FAA listed no slot program, but parking is booked ahead with the FBO and fills up during Derby week.
Derby week multiplies Louisville's business-jet traffic. In 2022, 1,069 business flights used SDF, Bowman Field and Clark Regional, more than three times the week before.
The FAA publishes Derby procedures each year. In 2026 they ran 29 April to 3 May, with a temporary tower at Clark Regional and a warning that air-filed flight plans might be refused.
Parking at SDF is booked in advance with the FBO, and long-term parking goes onto a taxiway. Expect plenty of helicopter, banner and blimp traffic near Churchill Downs.

How busy it gets
- 2022: 1,069 business flights across SDF, LOU and JVY in Derby week, up 229% on the week before.
- SDF alone went from 146 flights to 622.
- The FBO expected up to 700 aircraft, with more than 200 parked on two miles of taxiway.
- 2023: more than 900 private jet flights.
- NBAA reported no slot reservation program for the Derby in 2019, and the FAA listed none in 2026.
